Useful numbers, parameters, and general rules of thumb
General Rules of Thumb to Follow
- Change 10% of water every 2 weeks (cost ? $1.00 per gallon)
- One 2″-3″ fish per 10 gallons of tank size
- 1-2 lbs of live rock per 1 gallon of aquarium water (0.45 to 0.9 kg of live rock per ?4 liters of water)
- From bottom to top, fill 1/2 to 2/3 of tank with live rock
- Have 2-5 watts of lighting per gallon of water
Water Parameters
- Salinity= 1.025 sg at 78°F, or 35 ppt (parts per thousand)
- 1/2 cup salt mix per gallon of fresh water = 1.025 sg
- Temperature: 75°F
- pH= 8
When to replace equipment:
- Change LED bulbs every 3 to 4 years
- Change pumps every 3 years
- Change RO/DI filters every 6 months to 1 year
