General Rules of Thumb to Follow

  1. Change 10% of water every 2 weeks (cost ? $1.00 per gallon)
  2. One 2″-3″ fish per 10 gallons of tank size
  3. 1-2 lbs of live rock per 1 gallon of aquarium water (0.45 to 0.9 kg of live rock per ?4 liters of water)
  4. From bottom to top, fill 1/2 to 2/3 of tank with live rock
  5. Have 2-5 watts of lighting per gallon of water

Water Parameters

  1. Salinity= 1.025 sg at 78°F, or 35 ppt (parts per thousand)
    • 1/2 cup salt mix per gallon of fresh water = 1.025 sg
  2. Temperature: 75°F
  3. pH= 8

When to replace equipment:

  • Change LED bulbs every 3 to 4 years
  • Change pumps every 3 years
  • Change RO/DI filters every 6 months to 1 year
